He has hired your team of workers for his new restaurant. He needs a chef to prepare healthy meals and assist in menu planning. The dietician approves meals according to the food guide pyramid and assists in menu planning. The safety inspector is in charge of being sure food safety steps are followed. The manager will handle the advertising of the restaurant and promote the sale of the specialty cookbook. The manager will also help the staff work together.

A challenge for your team will be to come up with a name for the restaurant. This name must be catchy and promote healthy eating for children. All products your team create must send this healthy eating message.

The Task

Your first task is to complete the activities in the Pyramid Cafe Workbook (cover and pages 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22) to show that you understand how the food pyramid works. Once you have successfully completed this mission, you may move on to the next task.

Your second task is to come up with a name for your restaurant based on the type of food that is being offered. Remember, the goal is to have a restaurant that serves nutritious, kid-friendly meals.

Chef and Dietician- Based on the name of your restaurant, your next task is to develop recipes that will be used by the chef to make the meals. (To find recipes, check out the web sites below.) The dietician must approve the recipes chosen to ensure they are healthy and the portions are correct. To do this, you should use the food pyramid as a guide. These recipes will be used to make up the menu. You will need to find foods to serve for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desert. (Remember, the drinks must be healthy as well.)

Chef and Manager - Using the recipes found, your next task is to design and develop a menu to be used in your restaurant. It is important to make your menu easy to read and understand. Pictures of the foods are always a plus.

Dietician - The next task is to develop a pamphlet with tips for healthy eating to give to customers. This way, the patrons can understand why you are serving the foods you have chosen, along with the portion sizes. Your customers can also take these tips home and hopefully eat well on their own.
